DEVELOPMENT OF A PATTERN PROTRACTOR
in general, by "pattern” we understand the developnent
 of a surface for the determination of individual
ret cable lengths or planes or, as the case may be,
ingle curvature membrane surfaces. In a uniform-mesh
cable net, "pattern’ means the enumeration of comvlete
 mesh elements in the interior and measuring the
-emaining lengths out to the edge.

Models of pre-stressed cable net constructions are
seeing built on small scales at IL; this means that not
avery cable of the actual construction is represented.

vill be refined by graphic interpolation of the missing
sables in the graphical determination of pattern

[he so-called "pattern protractor" developed at IL
nakes possible simplified determination of pattern. It
~onsists of the uniform-mesh lattice of the desired net;
the intersection points can be rotated in opposition to
>ne another and the connecting struts can be adjusted
‘0 any desired interval. If the corner points of the
ipparatus are secured to the network intersection
soints in the "rough net" of the model and the edge
voint of the lattice adjusted to the cable direction,
all of the desired points of the final net can be read

TERMINOLOGICAL STUDIES
The development of lightweight wide-span roof
constructions is making rapid progress in many parts of
the world. However, the development of a technical
vocabulary for this field is still limited to a few
incidental and sporadic attempts.
Nevertheless, such a technical language is urgently
necessary if the experts are to be able to document
and discuss their work. No doubt some constructive
slunders and some financial expenditures can be
woided by exchanges of experience.
