BOGEN- UND STABTRAGWERKE AUS BAMBUS - NEUE MOGLICHKEITEN EXTREM LEICH-TER
UBERDACHUNGEN AUS BAMBUS
Bambus gilt außerdem in vielen Ländern

BAMBOO ARCH AND GRID STRUCTURES - NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXTREMELY LIGHT-WEIGHT
ROOF STRUCTURES MADE FROM BAMBOO
I. The application of bamboo as a building material
Bamboo i's one of the most interesting and important materials provided
by nature. For thousands of years bamboo has been used in the hot and
humid tropics as the dominant building material for housing. In Bangladesh
and Burma ca. 60 %, and on the Philippines more then 90 % of all
domestic dwellings are built of bamboo.
Although bamboo has a fast growth and can be used for house construction
after only four years, it is rarely used as a building material
in the sub-tropical and temperate climatic zones. The reason for this
may be that the working of bamboo especially the jointing of individual
canes requires consuming details than those we are acustomed to
when building with timber. The technique practised in hot and humid
climates of joining the bamboo canes by tying them together with
oundles of natural fibres, lianas or strips of bark is not feasible
in climatic zones having fluctuating humidity and temperature.
“urthermore, in many countries bamboo is regarded as the building
material of the poor because it is cheap and easily worked and
handled by the user.
2. The working and processing of bamboo canes
Lignification of bamboo canes take place after the third year of growth,
and it is then that the cane contains axially parallel fibres of
extremely high tensile strength (300 - 400 N/mm?). The tensile strength
of the inner fibre layer is up to 50% lower. Comparing the tensile
strength of constructional steel, softwood and bamboo rods of equal
weight, the bamboo rod can support three times the maximum load of the
softwood rod and six times the maximum load of the steel rod. The compressive
strenath of bamboo is app. 60 - 90 N/mm?
[he moister the bamboo canes the more easily they can be worked. For
sawing bamboo canes metal saw are most suitable. Wood saws are quickly
hlunted and produce a raaged edae of cut.
When working bamboo one should never forget that bamboo splits easily
and that any load acting perpendicularly to the fibre should be avoided
during working. The bamboo canes can very easily be split using
a machete or riving iron. Because of its high elasticity bamboo can
easily be bent. The thinner the sections the smaller the bending
radius that can be achieved. Bamboo canes which have been soaked in
water for a long time and are shaped while still moist will partially
retain this shape after drvina in the deformed state.
At 150°C bamboo can be shaped thermoplastcally. After cooling a permanent
deformation remains. The uniform heating of the cane section is,
however, rather difficult and not very successfull when using seasoned
canes, as the studies carried out at the Research Laboratory for experimental
constructions have shown. When heatinq the cane by radiation overglowing
cinders or a fire, it is almost impossible to avoid scorching the
surface. Heating is easier using a low-temperature of app. 300°C or a
steam jet which. however. should have a temperature of 2510 - 3NN°C.
