Das metallhüttenmännische Laboratorium ist für Arbeiten auf den Gebieten 
der Metallhüttenkunde und der metallurgischen Probierkunst eingerichtet. 
Zwei Gesichtspunkte waren für die Einrichtung maßgebend, einmal die Über- 
zeugung, daß der hüttenmännische Hochschulunterricht in die Laboratorien verlegt 
werden muß, sodann der Gedanke, daß das Studium der Grundlagen der Hütten- 
prozesse ein wesentliches Bildungsmittel ist. In letzterer Beziehung stimme ich 
Howe zu. wenn er sagt’): “Metallurgical laboratory instruction of the established 
Ofenraum (Nr. 22). 
type reproduces the industrial metallurgical processes, each as a whole, and with 
such fidelity ‘to actual industrial practice as is attainable, This, which ‚we. may 
call ‘Applied Metallurgy’, seems to me to have inherent and very grave faults. 
In its place I have tried to work out a system of a what we may call “Theoretical’ 
or better “Analytical Metallurgy’, with the aim of teaching, not individual processes 
each as a whole, but the individual ‚underlying principles, each by itself.” Die
