VERFAHREN ZUR ERMITTLUNG VON
MINIMALNETZEN MIT SEIFENLAMELLEN
2.1 Vorversuche
Versuche zur Darstellung von Minimalnetz-<onfigurationen
mit Hilfe von Seifenlamellen wurden
1963 von Frei Otto in Berlin gemacht: Zwei parallele
Slasplatten, durch ca. 1 cm hohe Gummizylinder
voneinander getrennt, wurden in eine Seifenlösung
getaucht , Nach dem Herausziehen bleiben zwischen
Gummizylindern und Glasplatten Seifenlamellen
stehen, die nur im Sonderfall Minimalnetzfiguren
darstellen.
traten teilweise vom Minimalnetzsystem abweichende
Konfigurationen auf, Die Abweichung von den
Minimalnetzkonfigurationen wurde von folgenden
Faktoren beeinflußt:
a Durchhang der Platten,
2 Bläschenbildung unterhalb der Bohrungen durch
gingesogene Luft,
Schwankungen von Fußboden und Unterlage, die
sich auf das Gerät Ubertrugen,
A Absenkgeschwindigkeit der Lösung.
Die Lebensdauer der Lamellen war für komplizierte
Konstellationen, die eine lange Einstellzeit
benötigen, zu gering.
Als Lösung wurde demineralisiertes Wasser mit einem
Geschirrspülmittel (Pril) verwendet.

DETERMINATION OF THE MINIMAL NET
USING SOAP FILMS
2.1 Preliminary Tests
In 1963, Frei Otto, Berlin, made tests to show
minimal net configurations by using soap film strips.
de used two parallel glass plates, seperated by a
-ubber cylinder, approximately 1 cm high dipped
‘nto a soap solution. When these were removed from
the soap solution, soap film strips were stretched
setween the rubber cylinders and the glass plates,
out it was found that these only represented minima!
net configurations in exceptional cases. Owing to
the large radius of the cylinders minimal net
configurations could not be referred to the central
axes of the cylinders since the film strips could not
meet (figure 7, 8). Furthermore, projection of the
cylinders does not result in points within the meaning
of the definition of the problem. In 1964, the
following revised test was made af the TH Stuttgart
snder the guidance of Frei Otto. Two parallel plexi
glass plates were firmly fixed in a basin filled with
a soap solution. The upper plate of these two was
engraved with a rectangular grid. The required
soints were marked by positioning needles between
the plates (figure 9). After lowering the level of the
soap solution, vertical film strips remained for which
the needles formed the vertical limits and the plates
the horizontal limits. The evaluation of the resulting
configurations showed that in some cases,
configurations occurred which deviated from the
<nown minimal net condition. These deviations were
‘nfluenced by the following factors:
a Deformation of the base plates,
5 the creation of small bubbles below the holes
drilled for,
transferred vibrations from the floor and the
olate,
‘he speed with which the soap solution was
drained.
Also for complicated constellations requiring a long
installation period, the life of the film strips was
too short,
The solution consisted of demineralised water and a
detergent (Pril).
