THE CHURCH OF ST. PETER, LOUVAIN. The Church of St. Peter was built, according to Justus Lipsius, at the close of the tenth century, by Lambert I. Count of Louvain; but other historians affirm that it was founded in 1040, by Lambert II., on the ruins of a heathen temple dedi cated to Mars. In 1130 it was burnt, with the whole town, but was rebuilt more beautiful and more magnificent than ever. The architecture is Gothic, and is very pleasing for its regularity: but the superb frontispiece which originally adorned it is still regretted. It had a noble tower 535 feet high, exclusive of the cross, and two very lofty lateral towers. The centre tower having experienced accidents, which greatly damaged it, in 1570 and 1578, was thrown down by a hurricane on the 31st of January, 1604, and destroyed in its fall the two side towers. The Church is in the form of a cross, and surmounted by a kind of dome. The nave is very lofty, and broad in proportion; it is separated from the aisles by columns, the style of which is remarkable. In the interior of the Church, and in the chapels, there are many things deserving the attention of travellers and artists : one of the most remarkable is the magnificent shrine for the relics, which forms so conspicuous an object in the Plate.
