>s4+ THE CATHEDRAL OF AMIENS. Amiens, on the Somma, formerly the capital of Picardy, is the Ambianum or Samaro-Briva Ambianorum of the ancients. Authors relate various fables respecting its foundation; some ascribe the honor of it to a Macedonian captain, others to the Emperor Antoninus Pius. The first of these opinions cannot be supported by any proof; and the second is manifestly contrary to the truth, for the town of Amiens was celebrated long before the time of Antoninus Pius. Julius Caesar himself had experienced the courage of the inhabitants. The city is handsome, with broad straight streets, several squares, and a good citadel. But the greatest ornament of Amiens is its magnificent Cathedral, dedi cated to Our Lady, one of the most beautiful and richly adorned in the kingdom. The Nave, the carving of the Stalls, and the Belfry are highly extolled by the connoisseurs. Among the relics formerly shewn, was what the inhabitants affirmed to be the head of St. John the Baptist. It was presented to the church, as they said, by Walter de Sarton, a gentleman of Picardy, who had taken the cross and was at the conquest of Constantinople, in 1204. It was there that he obtained this relic, with which he resolved to enrich his native country. The first bishop of Amiens was St. Firmin. Among his successors, several were declared saints, and there were other prelates illustrious for their dignity, their high offices, and their merit; among these there were several cardinals. Amiens has considerable manufactures of cloth, serge, velvet, silk, cotton, printed calicoes, &c. &c. The city has thirteen parishes, 6,000 houses, and 40,000 inhabitants. Before the Revolution there were twenty convents of both sexes. Among the celebrated men natives of Amiens are Peter the Hermit, Yoiture, Ducange, Rohault, Cresset, &c.
