RUE DU PUITS À LA CHAINE, ABBEVILLE. Abbeville, (Abbatis Villa,) situated on the Somme, five leagues from the Sea, was formerly the capital of the county of Ponthieu, in Picardy, in the diocese of Amiens. In ancient times, it was only a farm belonging to the Abbots of St. Riquier, which is two leagues distant. It was afterwards a chateau, and a priory was founded upon it; but Hugh Capet, desiring to convert it into a fortress, in order to check the incursions of the barbarians, took it from the monks of St. Riquier, of which lie had formerly been secular abbot, and having fortified it, gave it to Hugh, his son-in-law, who took the title of Defender, because the defence of St. Riquier had been confided to him. Angelram, his son, after having killed the Count of Boulogne in a battle, and married his widow, took the title of Count of Pontliieu. From this time it became a considerable town. It is the birth-place of Nicholas and William Sanson, eminent geographers, and of Pierre Duval, their sister’s son, and of Father Philip Breet, a Jesuit, who were likewise distinguished for their geographical knowledge. Abbeville was formerly the seat of a provincial tribunal, had fourteen parish churches, fifteen monasteries, an abbey, a com- mandery of the order of St. John of Jerusalem, a college, and a public library. It enjoyed very great privileges, and having never been taken, was called the Maiden, and in its motto it is styled Semper Fidelis. The relics of St. Wulfram, formerly Bishop of Sens, were transferred hither in 1205, from the Abbey of St. Vaudrelle, in the county of Caux. where he died. As the Somme, at the time of high water, is deep enough to bring up to the town boats heavily laden, and vessels of eighty tons burthen, the city carries on a very brisk trade. The exports consist, partly of fine cloths, linen, &c. of which there are manufactories in the town ; and partly of corn, hemp, flax, &c. the pro duce of the neighbouring country, which are chiefly transported to Britany and to Bayonne. We shall have another occasion to speak of the Cathedral, which is here seen in the background of our view. i
