THE CLOCK TOWER, AT MONS.
Mons, (Montes Hannonice) a handsome and strong city of Belgium, formerly
the capital of the County of Hainault, is situated upon a hill, on the banks of the
little river Trulle. By the inhabitants of the county it is called Bergen; it is large
and well fortified, and has a good citadel and many handsome buildings. Mons is
celebrated for its commerce, its good workmen, and its religious establishments,
especially the Abbey of Canonesses of Saint Waltrude, Duchess of Lorraine.
When Saint Waltrude retired to this spot it was desert and uninhabited ; it was called
the Mountain of Castrilloc : Hidulphe, a relation of the Saint, built only a cell with
a chapel for her; to this spot several young ladies followed her, to live in poverty
and retirement; but Saint Waltrude having caused a magnificent Abbey to be
erected, instituted the order of Canonesses, to whom she added a few Canons, but
merely to manage the affairs of the establishment. The Canonesses were obliged
to make proof of their nobility, and were in fact always of the most distinguished
families in the country. In the morning they attended divine service in ecclesiastical
habits, but wore a secular habit the rest of the day; they were also at liberty to
quit their establishment to marry. Saint Waltrude gave to the superior the title of
Abbess, and endowed the Abbey with great possessions in Hainault, Brabant, &c.
with the jurisdiction, both civil and ecclesiastical, so that this institution became
very rich and powerful, and the dignity of the Abbess was so considerable, that
she who was invested with it had the right to put the Count of Hainault in
possession of the County.
