“rei Otto ZNTRODUCTINN — 10 YEARS | Dear friends from all over the world. Welcome here to Stuttgart, welcome to our tent! Some voyages were long and strenuous. Thank you for your efforts. The thanks of all of us to the Volkswagenwerk Foundation which made possible this trip from manv countries on earth. The IL has been existing for ten years now: an occasion to celebrate, an occasion for this meeting. In the meantime the IL has many bases all over the world, and we wished to meet again. - One year ago some of us met at St. Louis and decided to hold this colloquium. Jointly we wanted to define future tasks in practice, research and science. The topic could only be: "Adaptable Building"! As a leitmotiv of IL's work it indicates a way towards a more humane architecture as we envision it. - But a gav summar Dartv could naither be lackino! At the tenth anniversary of the IL I would like to report on the past life of the IL in just a few words. It reflects a time of strong amotions and tensions: The institute was created in 1964 on the initiative of Fritz Leonhardt (condition for my coming to Stuttgart). Even though he is not here today and my present attitude may no longer comply with his wishes, I and tha antire IL still want to thank him particularly. With regard to the field of vork the IL has developed according to plan and to the then most bold dreams. The IL has been established in 1964 as a research institute which worked scientifi- cally under the direction of an architect within the scope of the Building Faculty which at that time still comprised civil angineers and architects, and which, by rernuncing the individual work system intro- duced genuine teamwork. - 3asically the team comprised two scientists, one foreman, one secretary and the director. Thus we had five "permanent established sosts". This still is the size of the Jniversity of Stuttgart staff, and in the Future it will have to remain like that. As such a small group does not ensure an effec- tive working, we looked for additional support which we also got later on. In the summer term of 1964 our activities were taken up by a seminar for architects and engineers on the reciprocation of light- weight, economy and form in the design of constructions. At that time we built our tables and chairs in the ugly brickwork Juilding at KeplerstraBe 10 in the city of Stuttgart and started to underset the lightweight building theory which had becoms rather well-known by that time, by experi- nents and measurements of BIC values. Today ye have the informations we were then sear-— ching for, and are now in a position to not only compare building constructions, but all objects of dead nature (starting from the atom to the solar system), of living nature (From cell to plant and animal) and of tech- 10logy (from brick to supports, beams, ‘rame-works) as well, according to their constructional effectiveness. We know the sizes of the material requirements of many constructions, and, by that, the basis for any further research planning in our depart- nent. The report on this work has been resting in Jur archive for some years now where it waits for its publication. The stars were shining on the IL in 1965 « almost too aright. We got our first big government contract. This animated us, and for one year we had to triple our team. We were to sstablish the fundamentals for the construc- tion of the German Pavilion at Montreal. ve built models, made patterns and tested all details at a scale of 1:1. We were in the midst of theory and practice and did dractically everything with our own hands hat had to do with the execution of that ouilding’s roof. The IL staff worked on 1lanning and construction supervision and sven in the manufacturers’ plants, and "inally checked the ready building.
