23 24 25 Yotives: One must see the motive for this adaptivity among the most varied factors of the pueblo way of life. Building Technique: - The very limited durability of tha main building material, loam, calls for constant repair work - a continuous process. The loam is easily worked without special tools. Structures that show themselves as to be unsatisfactory can sasily be removed or adapted. - Loam is to be found everywhere in the close vicinity of the house and its properties are well known to the pueblo inhabitants through their various activities (agriculture. pottery). - The trunk length, limited to 3-4 m of the stunted ceders used for roof beams, means that all pueblos are built to a type of space module. - Building elements that are not of fixed purpose, e.g. no difference between doors and windows, roofs and ceilings, inner and outer walls, simplifies change of use with further growth. Economv: - Limited capital. Loam structures and building elemants are cheap, structural alte- rations involve no great expense. - Space allocation. There is no land owner- ship, only element ownership. With further jrowth the terrace roofs are considered as articifial ground area and so as belonging to the community of large. - Property distribution. All things important to the survival of the community at large, such as air, water, ground, stores and tools belong to the community. - Responsibilities of the sexes. In the natriarchal order of things the houses and household effects are the responsibility of the women. A practical shaping of things is ancouraqged by the women’s activities. Nay of Life: = The pueblo’s level social development without any kind of hierarchy, is matched by the lack of hierarchy in the space-form- organisation. - No architecture. Building as a means of self-manifestation, as a capital investment or a security against misfortune, is wholely Jnknown to the Pueblos. - No decision difficulties. The fact that the owner, agent, architect and user is combined in a single person makes the very rapid decisions over alterations. Thinking: The thinking of the Pueblos is like their building. The linguistic researcher Wharf noticed conspicuous differencies between the thinking and speaking habits of a Pueblo tribe (Hopi) and our own: - Overlapping in place of delimitation, action in place of things. While we separate the things that we perceive one from another, the Hopis speak of links and mergings, they see, in place of a constant object, different interwoven phases. - Love of life rather than a love of death. In the world of the Pueblos love has a place in all things living, while with us, love has to do with dead things. Thus the buil- dings of these people are not dead monuments or objects of prestige but a part of a constantly changing and regenerative living process. Adapt = React What can we learn from the example of the Pueblos? Our building constructions which depend on highest technology point not to adaptivity but to a preconception of future development possibilities. Demolition and rebuilding will be for us, more and more, the economical solution because, with our building methods, we can no lenger meet the ever more rapidly changing living requirements. In the building technology of the Pueblos we can see what is lacking in our buildings: A way of escape, a permanent reconstruction, an undetermined final condition. Adaptivity with the Pueblos is an achievement of the users and not the result of special 1imicky building methods. A 197°
