MACROSCOPE [t was not possible to obtain good macrophotos with our old stereo microscope. This is no longer a problem with our new WILD M 400 photo macroscrope with automatic exposure timer which is specially designed for photos (24x36 mm and Polaroid 3 1/4 x 4 1/4). One can choose between light-dark field with transmitted light, and flexible three-arm glass fiber illumination with reflected light, allowing short exposure times. The magnification of the zoom lens and front lenses ranges from 4 to 80 times for visual observation and from 1:1 to 20.5:1 on 35 mm film. The depth of focus range of stereoscopic lenses can be increased by stopping down. As a further stage, a lighting device is planned for macro photos without depth of focus limitation. A number of impressive photos was taken, both of natural objects and of experiments. Some of them will be oublished in IL 18 "Forming Bubbles" and IL 22 n Form" CHAMBERED PNEUS Pneumatic objects made up of several composite pneus, connected by internal and external bracings which consist of individual tension elements and/or membranes, filled with air or liquids, are highly effective structures. This subject is of great interest, above all from the point of view of biosciences. Plants and animals, forms and types of movement are determined in many cases and many ways by the pneumatic structural system. We consulted Eberhard Haug in Paris, Ted Happold and Chris Williams in Bath, and Martin Wadepuhl in Ulm to investigate forms and form modifications of chambered pneus under different internal and external load conditions with computer-assisted methods (FE) Jur previous findings which we mainly obtained by empirical methods formed the basis of these studies We plan to hold a colloquium on this subject within the scope of SFB 230 as soon as the first results of the computations are available, and we will also invite further research scientists from the field of biosciences who have already studied the hydroskeleton of vermiform animals and the “pneumatic” processes in herbaceous plants. Llu Me= os | ——— ONCE AGAIN: GAUDI™S SUSPENDED MODEL Our reconstruction of Gaudi”s suspended model for the Colonia Giiell church was sold by the Kunsthaus Zurich to the Cultural Foundation of the Caixa de Pensiones in Barcelona in 1985. Unfortunately, it was not permanently installed in Barcelona, as was commonly expected. On the contrary, since then the highly sensitive model is being sent on a touring exhibition - against our express advice and contrary to the original plans. Despite all scruples, the IL looked after the model during the shipping and exhibition preparations untit now in order to prevent major damage. After unsuccessful negotiations with the responsible persons, we have now felt compelled to refuse any further cooperation. We don"t want to be also held responsible for the suspended model. Within short, we will publish a detailed statement concerning the necessary care and treatment of the model. We still hope for an agreement before the model is Jost. PS: The model was considerably damaged in transit to the Gaudi exhibition in Amsterdam in April 1988, and it could only be repaired with a great deal of effort. Arcus is back again. Even though not as a “Journal for Cid tam Architecture and Science" as was the case since the beginning of 1983, but as a book series published by Verlagsgesellschaft Rudolf Miller, Cologne. For the moment all issues will be in German only. The first volume "Perspektiven" has just come out (price: 30.00 DM), and three further volumes on the subjects "Wissenschaftsverstidndnis", "Entstehung technischer Teile" and "Genesis der Form" are to follow in 1988. The series will also be edited by Martina Schneider. Publishers and scientific advisors are Thomas Herzog (architecture), Edgar Liischer (physics), Stefan Polonyi (civil engineering), Christina von Weizsdcker (biology) and Frei Otto. V.G. SUCHOV, THE RUSSIAN ENGINEER ¢ Vladimir Grigorevic Suchov was one of the most important civil engineers of the late 19th and early 20th century. His works are still little known in the western part of the world. Suchov’s lightweight structures have been investigated at the IL for some years now. At present, an exhibition is prepared - jointly by Soviet and German experts - which is to be held in Stuttgart in 1989 and then in Moscow The following Soviet institutions will participate in Moscow: Scusev Museum of Architecture, Central Research Institute for Theory and History of Architecture, Kujbysev [nstitute for Civil Engineers (MISI), Suchov Commemoration Commission at the Presiding Committee of the USSR Academy of Science; and on the German side ir Stuttgart: Institute for Lightweight Structures (IL) and the SFB 230 "Natural Structures”, University Library, and Institute for Foreign Relations (IfA). BOOK REVIEW - IL 31 “BAMBUS / BAMBOO" > Rather incidentally I found a note on a book, some kind of documentation, in a technical journal. I ordered this book and started to leaf through it and read. I marvelled over a full weekend and many an evening. I didnt admire the colorful Haute Couture architecture of our days nor the presentation of architects” self-importance, but I rather marvelled at the secret of a material, its flexibility and superior properties, its artistic processing, the beauty of its workmanship. I marvelled at the grace of its architecture and its dignified transcience. I curiously listened into the scientific articles, and I felt like they were friends - the authors and the material they studied, the human beings who live with it, and the structures.
