DIE ENTSTEHUNG DER ARBEIT [HE ORIGIN AND PRCGRESS OF THE WCRK Die Anregung, eine Forschungsarbeit in japanisch- deutscher Kooperation durchzuführen, kam von Kenzo Tange. Er kannte das Interesse der Seibu Company und ihres Präsidenten, Yoshiaki Tsutsumi, für neuartige und industriell herstellbare Konstruktionen in Leicht- bauweise; er wußte um die langjährigen Erfahrungen Frei Ottos auf diesem Gebiet und er kannte die am IL durchgeführten Untersuchungen der verschiedenen Bau- weisen, Aus einer Reihe thematischer Vorschläge des IL wählte man bei einem Besuch Frei Ottos in Tokyo das Thema Gitterschalen aus. Zwischen der Seibu Construktion Company Ltd., Tokyo (vertreten durch ihren Direktor Takeshi Hasegawa), Kenzo Tange und dem Institut für leichte Flächentrag- werke (IL), Universität Stuttgart (vertreten durch Frei Otto und Berthold Burkhardt) wurde Ende 1970 ein Forschungsvertrag Uber zwei Jahre abgeschlossen. Die Seibu Construction Company Ubernchm die Kosten der Forschungsarbeiten; das IL stellte seine gesamten Vor- untersuchungen und seine Grundausstattung (Geräte, Werkstatt, Fotolabor, Archiv) mit Personal zur Ver- fugung. Mitte Mai 71 entsandten die japanischen Partner ihre Mitarbeiter nach Stuttgart. Von der Seibu Company kamen Toshiyuki Shirayanagi (Architekt) und Kazunori Matsushita (Bauingenieur), von Kenzo Tange kam Keizo Sataka (Architekt). Die Leitung des Teams Uber~ nahm Jurgen Hennicke (Bauingenieur) von Seiten des IL. In der allgemeinen und finanziellen Organisation wurde das Team von Berthold Burkhardt unterstützt. Zusammen mit Frei Otto vertrat er die Arbeit im Sonder- Forschungsbereich 64 "Weitgespannte Flächentragwerke" Universität Stuttgart (SFB 64). Die Arbeiten wurden in den ersten zwei Jahren am IL durchgeführt. Nach Ablauf des Vertrages im Juli 73 teilte sich das Team: bei der Seibu Company in Tokyo wurden die Arbeiten in Richtung einer konstruktiven Realisierung von Gitterschalen fortgesetzt; am IL wurde = im Rahmen des SFB 64 - zunächst mit dem Schwer- punkt auf der Veröffentlichung der Forschungsergebnisse weitergearbeitet. Die Verbindung zu dem Team in Tokyo wurde durch einen ständigen Austausch von Informationen aufrechterhalten. The stimulus for conducting a joint research project ınder Japanese-German cooperation was supplied by Kenzo Tange. He was aware of the interest shown by he Seibu Company and its president, Yoshiaki Tsutsumi in innovative lightweight structures which could be ‘ndustrially produced. He knew of Frei Otto's long vears of experience in this field and of the investi- gations into various methods of construction which have been conducted at IL. On a visit to Tokyo by Frei Otto the theme "Grid Shells" was selected from a list of suggestions proposed by the IL. At the end of 1970, a contract providing for two rear’s research was agreed to by the Seibu Construction Tompany Ltd., Tokyo (represented by its director, lakeshi Hasegawa), Kenzo Tange, and the Institute for -ightweight Structures (IL), University of Stuttgart represented by Frei Otto and Berthold Burkhardt). The Seibu Construction Company assumed the research costs; the IL made available the results of all its oreliminary investigations, its personnel and ground facilitie: (equipment, workshop, photo laboratory, archives). n the middle of May, 1971, the Japanese sent their :olleagues to Stuttgart. The general and financial organization of the team vas supported by Berthold Burkhardt, who represented, along with Frei Otto, the work of the Sonderforschungs oereich 64 "Wide-spanned Surface Structures". University of Stuttgart (SFB 64). The work was conducted at IL during the first two years. Upon termination of the contract in July, 1973, the team separated: at the Seibu Company in Tokyo the work was continued along the lines of actual grid shell construction; at the IL = within the framework of SFB 64 - work continued with the emphasis on publi- shing the results of the research. Contact with the tear in Tokyo was maintained through a steady exchange of information.
