affung > 1 - 4 an. Aber auch die periphere Raf
fung ist möglich > 5. Es ist nicht ausgeschlossen,
daß Zeltdächer insbesondere bei kleinen
Theatern oder bei allen Regenschutzdächern über
Theatern der nördlichen Region angewandt wurden.
Mastgestützte Zeltdächer sind ein guter Regenschutz
und können sogar bei entsprechender Dinensionierung
selbst Schneelasten aufnehmen. Vernutlich
wurden Zeltddcher im Mittelmeerraum nicht
wr zum Sonnenschutz sondern auch zum Regenschutz
/erwendet.

THE TENT ROOF
Whether in Roman times typical tents were used
as sunshades or awnings is not historically documented.
Since, however, tents did exist, the
use of tents for the above purpose cannot only
be excluded but on the contrary has to be assumed
> GT 116.1.
Even though no Roman examples are known we must
assume that tents could be retracted or reefed.
A simple way of reefing a tent is central reefing
> 1 - 4, Peripheral reefing is, however, al-50
possible > 5. One cannot exclude the possibility
that particularly in small theatres or for
all rain roofs above theatres of the northern
region tent roofs were used.
Mast-supported tent roofs offer good protection
against rain and can even support snow loads if
“he dimensions are chosen correctly. Presumably
tent roofs were not only used for protection against
the sun but also against the rain within
the Mediterranean region. Since the Roman armies
had tents it is, however, possible that tent roofs
vere used north of the Alps. In any case it must
be suspected that the Romans covered theatres with
tents as protection against the rain or at least
tried to do so. Thus Lipsius proposes a mast-supported
tent for an amphitheatre in 1575 > GT 140.1
dhether the four large holes in the amphitheatre
in Trier > 6 could have been mast sockets is not
necessary probable, but the possibility can in no
nay be excluded. They are undoubtedly arranged in
a very favourable position, as the photograph of
the model shows (models: Atelier Warmbronn, Heinz
Joster, Hannes Fritz, author). In this context
see p. 109, mast-supported convertible roofs be-‘onging
to the most common types of modern vela.
