REFLEXIONEN ZUM WANDGEMALDE VON POMPEJI
Das Amphitheater von Pompeji, Grundrif > GA 84,
Schnitt > GA 81, GA 82, GT 80.1 und 80.2, wurde
in gleicher Zeit wie das Theater umgebaut. Es
definden sich heute noch Ring- und Pfannenstei
ne aus Lava am Theater. Diese Steine befinden
sich auBerhalb eines oberen Aufbaues, dessen
exakte Form nicht mehr bekannt ist. Aus späterer
Zeit ist durch das Wandbild von Pompeji (79
n. Chr.) belegt > S. 82, daB dieses Theater eir
Velum gehabt hat, Das Wandbild wurde erst 1869
entdeckt.

REFLECTIONS ON THE MURAL OF POMPEII
The amphitheatre of Pompeii, plan > GA 84, section
> GA 81, GA 82, GT 80.1 and 80.2, was altered
at the same time as the theatre. Ring and
socket stones consisting of lava can still be
seen on the theatre. These stones are mounted
outside of an upper super-structure whose exact
shape is no longer known. The later mural of Pompeii
(79 A.D.) proves that this theatre was equip
ned with a velum > page 82. The mural was only
discovered in 1869. Especially with this theatre
the existence of this mural and the remains of
nasonry still extant lead to the conclusions al
ready referred to.
A GA 84
was an authentischen Informationen
in ihm stecken könnte.
Es is’

[t may be appropriate to have another careful
look at the mural of Pompeii. It is the only contemporary
illustration showing quite clearly vela
above an amphitheatre. One can study this mural
again and again and attempt to interpret all the
authentic data which could be contained in it.
We have reconstructed the theatre in a small model
(see page 86 and 87) and tried several roof
forms. We have attempted to photograph our models
approximately from the same viewpoint from
which the original painter painted the mural, on
the justifiable assumption that the theatre depicted
is identical in its entire extent with the
theatre still extant today. One must stress, however,
that in the mural the proportions of the
amphitheatre are somewhat distorted. In the pic
ture the velum is stretched between two towers.
It is documented that the theatre had three towers
whose foundations are still extant. It is
not entirely clear from which direction the the
atre was viewed > GA 84. Graefe suspects direction
A, whereas I am inclined to assume direction
B. It is also to be noted that the painter
intended to depict a political event. Furthernore
it is remarkable that the velum is viewed
from an elevated position. Such a view of the
velum was inclined towards the centre and downwards.
Had the velum been inclined upwards, one
could not have seen it from above, nor would
the painter. It is also worth noting that this
nural shows onlv one roof segment. This picture
