rechte Striche entdecken und also Maste interjretieren

allows several conclusions. 1. The painter has
only painted one segment because at the time
a velum was only stretched out on this side.
2. Because the theatre had a velum only on that
side. 3. Because he only wanted to show this velum
 in order not to cut off the view of the arena;
in this case one would have to imagine the
remaining vela.

One has also found ring stones on the opposite
side of the theatre, but one has been unable to
orove that these were used. Those who are looking
for proof that masts were located at the up-Jer
edge of the amphitheatre exactly in those
dlaces where sockets were found, may even be able
to discover vertical lines and to interpret
these as masts > GT 113, not only close to the
right of the right-hand tower but also above the
front stairway.
According to what we know today, the roof is located
either on the east or south east side. It
is here where it provides the optimum shade. The
roof looks very much Tike a wooden cantilever
roof. Its inclination is not clearly visible,
aor can one see a cable between the tips of the
wooden poles and the mast on the tower. It there
fore remains entirely open whether this theatre
was equipped with a self-supporting cantilever
roof, a suspended cantilever roof or a battenstiffened
 roof.

The amphitheatre in Pompeii is remarkably large
but has a relatively narrow seating area. Comparative
computations for the various shapes of
roof were also carried out for the amphitheatre
of Pompeii. In this case a straight forward cantilever
 roof is, however, especially critical.
Aith a wind speed of 12 m/sec and the necessary
roof weight of 10 - 12 kp/m® a roof with a span
of 18 m would barely be stable, since the acceptable
bending moment at the mast is approximately
3.000 kp/m. One has also computed the
forces produced by an inverted dome and a suspended
ring. If one covers the entire amphitheatre
with an inverted dome or a large suspended
ring shading the rows of seating completely, a
nembrane stress of circa 1.000 kp/m is produced
The masts are just about able to cope with this
force. In other words: given the same strength
of the upper rim, the inverted dome or the canvas
ring enables a greater shading to be obtained.
